Anthropology Museum
This small but interesting museum is located next to the Convention Center. It features archeological pieces from around the State.
Excursions by Boat
There are a large number of boat cruises which leave daily from Cancun. You can explore Isla Mujeres, bird watch on Contoy Island, visit El Garafon for snorkeling or just enjoy a relaxing day on the water.
Chichen-Itzá
Chichen-Itzá is located in the State of Yucatan 120 km East of Mérida and 190 km West of Cancun. This impressive ruin has some fascinating structures such as El Castillio, a 78 foot pyramid, which is in reality a solar calendar. Each of the four sides has 91 steps, and there is one step at the top. Each day of the year a shadow falls on a different step. El Caracol is an observatory. The windows are placed so that different constellations can be observed at different times of year. For those choosing to spend the night, there is an excellent light and sound show each evening.
Contoy Island
Contoy Island is a bird sanctuary for large nesting colonies and wild frigates. Located about 45 minutes north of Isla Mujeres, Isla Contoy has an lookout tower with a spectacular panoramic view. Full day excursions are available daily. A limited number of visitors are allowed on the island each day making reservations are a must.
El Rey Ruins
The El Rey Ruins, located in Cancun’s Hotel Zone, were built as a ceremonial center by Mayan fisherman. It is an excellent place to learn a little about the Mayan Civilization.
Isla Mujeres
Isla Mujeres is a small, Caribbean island located six nautical miles off the coast of Cancun. Its picturesque name, which means “Isle of women” dates from the early 15th century. When the Spanish first landed on the island, they found female figurines scattered on the beach which is how the Island got its name.
Puerto Juarez and Punta Sam
The fast boat to Isla Mujeres for passengers only leaves from Puerto Juarez. The car ferry leaves from the Punta Sam dock. Puerto Juarez is 5 kilometers from downtown Cancun and Punta Sam 10 kilometers.
Water Sports
Many beach front hotels offer water-sports centers where guests can rent rubber rafts, snorkeling equipment and kayaks. Marinas located on the Nichupte Lagoon
offer wind-surfers, motorized jet skis, para-sailing, water-skiing, and sailboats. The most popular activity on this beautiful lagoon is the Jungle Tour.
Interactive Aquarium at La Isla Shopping Center
This beautiful aquarium offers clients the opportunity of feeding and touching the marine life. The Aquarium also has an interactive dolphin program.
Parque Nizuc
This water park, located in Cancun’s hotel zone, offers a variety of water activities. In addition to slides and pools, the park has an interactive dolphin program and a snorkel area where clients can enjoy seeing manta rays and tropical fish.
Bullfight Show
Cancun has a small bullring where bullfights and a Mexican show are performed.
Clubs & Music
Clubbing or discoing in Cancun can become an all night affair. Clubs begin to fill up about 11 pm and often stay open until 5 or 6 am. For those looking for a more sedate evening out, there are bars in many hotels offering live music. The Bandstand, targeting a more mature market, is a new restaurant bar offering dancing to a live band.
Folkloric Ballet
Nightly performances of the Ballet Folklorico de Cancun are held at the Cancun Convention Center. This colorful show presents traditional dances from all over Mexico. You can go for dinner and the show or just for the show.
Puerto Morelos
Puerto Morelos , located 22 miles south of Cancun, is a fishing port and resort area. There are beautiful beaches and a variety of restaurants offering fresh seafood. The crocodile zoo and the botanical gardens are definitely worth visiting.
Riviera Maya
The Riviera Maya is the name given the Mexican Caribbean coast stretching from Playa del Secreto just South of Cancun to Punta Allen in the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve. Popular destinations on the Rivera Maya are Playa del Secreto, Punta Maroma, Playa del Carmen, Playacar, Puerto Aventuras, Akumal, Tulum and Punta Allen. The ecological parks of Tres Rios, Xcaret, Xel-Ha and Aktun Chen Caves are all located in this area.
Xcaret
Xcaret, known as the Sacred Paradise of the Mayan Civilization, is one of the area’s most complete ecological parks. It is located just south of Playa del Carmen. It offers an interactive dolphin program, an underground river float, snorkeling, diving and much more. This is a wonderful place to spend the day with your family. At night there is a spectacular Ballet Folklorico presentation in the impressive, new theater.
Xel Ha
According to Mayan lore, millions of years ago the gods created the most beautiful corner of the Mayan land and called it Xel-Ha. Pleased with their efforts, they agreed to share it with men, but to keep the park from being destroyed or polluted, they named the Iguana and the Parrotfish guardians of the land and sea respectively. The park offers excellent snorkeling, a river float, scuba diving an interactive dolphin program and much more. It is located south of Cancun near the Tulum ruins.
Cozumel
The Mayans, the first inhabitants of Cozumel, named the island "Cumail" which means Land of the Swallows. The Mayans considered Cozumel a sacred place. The Island is considered one of the best destinations for scuba diving in the world. Chancanaab Park offers excellent snorkeling, a bontanical garden, a replica of a Mayan village and an interactive dolphin program. As Cozumel is a popular port for cruise ships, the shopping district is extensive offering a wide variety of products.
Tulum
The archeological site of Tulum is open daily from 8am-5pm. It is situated on a cliff overlooking the Caribbean. A cove at the bottom of cliff is ideal for those wanting to take a refreshing swim. A trip to Tulum can easily be combined with stops along the coast for sun bathing, swimming and snorkeling.
